Vainglory

THE ORNAMENTAL SWORD OF ZIGMUND

Vainglory was the garishly ornamental sword belonging to Sir Zigmund, the brazen leader of the Purefoy faction of the Electors of Limerot during the Second Great Schism. The Purefoys had sided with the Imposter Queen, Dormella, in her bid to usurp her brother, Lido, for the rule of the Viridian Empire. Their party was opposed by the Bannermen, those Electors who sided with Lido and were led by the venerable Sir Veridot. From his fortress at Purefoy Castle, Sir Zigmund led strikes against the Bannermen, or the Green and Whites as they came to be known, often brandishing Vainglory to rally his troops to battle. They scored several victories during the decades-long conflict, but Dormella’s reign was ultimately ended at the Battle of Apocatylo. Zigmund and his fellow Purefoys were captured and those who survived the war were forced to abdicate their positions and forfeit their holdings. Zigmund escaped confinement and led a life of constant peregrination, eventually falling in with a crew of Drow pirates called the Carrion Crowes in the Inner Sea. Tales of a dashing eastron pirate with a golden sword soon spread among the cities along the sea. He was eventually killed in an engagement with Magehunters several years after his defeat at Apocatylo and the sword passed to Beckit, captain of the Crowes.

Vainglory is currently held by Drisi, self-styled Countess of the Inner Sea. She won it after mutiny against her former captain, Colosimo, and assuming control of the Cold Dowagers, themselves a mutinous offshoot of the ancient Carrion Crowes.
