SUTEKHI
A DOG BREED NATIVE TO THE FRONTIER LANDS
The Sutekhi is a breed of dog native to the frontier lands. This lean, sinewy breed originated from a pack of feral anubites long ago domesticated by the huntsmen of Dry Salem. Sutekhi are well known for their short, smooth coat, stiff ears and long forked tail, which stands on end and often sways rhythmically when the dogs are at ease. Their tall, muscular legs allow them to reach incredibly high speeds while running, a feat often observed at races held each year at Taliesin’s Farewell to the Sun at the Old Embre oasis on the Winter Solstice. Their coats range in hue from a sandy tan color to a ruddy brown, with golden accents. Their heads, backs and tails are colored a deep brown to almost black, and golden lines of fur surround their amber-colored eyes. Sutekhi are also renowned for their loyalty, even at times being overly attached to their masters. It is not uncommon to find several Sutekhi in a hunting party traveling the outskirts of the Forsaken Desert, but the large breed is also found within the homes of wealthier citizens of the frontier lands. Chief Alder Yaro of Dust Hill keeps a pair of sibling Sutekhi, Mara and Mona; while Pewter, the reclusive Archduke of the Eynhallow, keeps a rather robust Sutekhi named Zed as part of his retinue of hounds.
Few Sutekhi have been entered into the Baron’s Cove Canine Club Pageant over the years, despite their exotic appearance. However, the most noteworthy entrant was during the Tricentennial Tournament held in the resort city of Bayside. Anutza was the striking Sutekhi belonging to Vinciguerra, Vizier of Narobensis. At some point during the pageant, Vinciguerra fell gravely ill and poison was suspected. Anutza, as calm and noble a hound as had ever been observed by the Canine Club, viciously attacked Dindraine, Chief Octroyer of the Loci Manaworks and winner of the past four competitions. It was soon discovered that Dindraine had been the one to poison Vinciguerra, who he pereived as a threat to his winning of the Quince Cup. For her bravery and loyalty, Anutza was crowned champion of the pageant and she stayed by her master’s side during his long recovery.
