Onmyoji

A ROYAL CONJURER OF THE KING OF NAL

Within the kingdom of Nal, there exists a curious station among the nobility, that of the onmyoji. Regarded as the King’s Royal Conjurer, the onmyoji practices a form of necromancy, calling forth spirits of the dead to advise the King of Nal. In addition, the onmyoji also acts as the King’s Royal Banisher, exorcising wayward spirits who have taken undue possession of the living. This strange occurrence seems to happen in Nal more often than any other nation, as local legends claim that on their nightly passage to the afterlife, departing spirits would often be distracted by the beauty of the twin rivers, the Sunwater and the Moonwater, and settle in the minds of the sleeping denizens of Nal. Clad in their crimson robes and distinctive mitred caps, it was the job of the onmyoji to separate the errant spirit from the body of the possessed and guide it back on its path to the afterlife. The jingling of the many gold, silver and bronze coins that decorate their attire was the telltale sign of the coming of an onmyoji, and it was this rattling that was said to confuse the spirits in order for the Royal Conjurer to work his or her Magick.

The spirits are often featureless, just a mass of floating ectoplasm that speaks through the onmyoji. Though some skeptics claim that this conjuring is nothing more than an elaborate parlor trick, the onmyoji has held a treasured place among the monarchy of Nal for centuries.
