MAGICK

THE UNNATURAL STUDY OF THE SPIRITUAL WORLD

Magick is a peculiar study, mostly forgotten of by modern Man. In ancient days, the pursuit of the “Sixteen Disciplines” was taught at lyceums, special magickal academies spread throughout the known world. The Sixteen Disciplines were separated into three distinct lineages: the Primordial, Outer and Inner Disciplines. Each Discipline was guided by a High Mage, who had mastered all the secrets of their particular skill, and these High Mages were in turn guided by an Archmage, a paragon at the very pinnacle of the magickal arts. The first recorded Archmage was a man by the name of Kajidoh, who hailed from the ancient city of Valvalis. After the Heroes defeated the Gods, the use of Magick (seen as a tool of the Gods) declined until very few of the ancient lyceums remained. Most Magick is now taught in secret or handed down through the old mage families, the most notable being the Jonagolds of Riverhallow.

THE FIRST PRIMORDIAL DISCIPLINE:

HELIOMANCY

Practitioners of the First Primordial Discipline are known as heliomancers or sunmages. The skills of the heliomancer include the ability to emit and control light, the creation of phaetons, and divination by observation of the sun. This last skill has led many heliomancers to go blind in their worship of the Sempiternal Sun. Those that remain are normally found begging outside bazaars and taverns, their once gleaming golden robes tattered and soiled. The first High Mage of Heliomancy was named Miraphora and she hailed from the archaic city of Tamarkin.

THE SECOND PRIMORDIAL DISCIPLINE:

SELENOMANCY

Practitioners of the Second Primordial Discipline are known as selenomancers or moonmages. The skills of the selenomancer include the ability to emit and control darkness, the conjuring and control of strixes, the ability to inflict lunacy, and divination by observation of the phases of the moon. Moonmages would commonly cover their bodies in white powder and paint intricate lunar swirls and patterns on their skin in blue woad. They wore white hoods to conceal their faces and were rarely encountered during daylight hours. The first High Mage of Selenomancy was named Nilavu and he hailed from the mythical city of Rho.

THE THIRD PRIMORDIAL DISCIPLINE:

ASTROMANCY

Practitioners of the Third Primordial Discipline are known as astromancers or starmages. The skills of the astromancer include the conjuring and control of meteor showers, the construction of asterisms, and divination by observation of the constellations. Clad in their blue and purple robes with their heads shaved clean, starmages can sometimes still be found working side by side with astrologists in universities around the world, but more and more they are becoming a rare sight. The first High Mage of Astromancy was named Rozemberk and he hailed from the observatory at Geralton.

THE FOURTH PRIMORDIAL DISCIPLINE:

CHRONOMANCY

Practitioners of the Fourth Primordial Discipline are known as chronomancers or timemages. The skills of the chronomancer include the ability to slow or speed up time, the creation of clockworks, and divination by observation of the passage of time. Chronomancers are the primordial mages who most easily integrated into the more scientific-leaning modern world, as their knowledge of clockworks was an invaluable tool to the first arcanists construcing aeroships. Though they rarely wear their ancient livery of black and gold, nor carry their traditional gear-topped staves, timemages are still employed by many Arcanist Guilds around the world. The first High Mage of Chronomancy was named Procopio and he hailed from the industrial city of Llandrilo.

THE FIRST OUTER DISCIPLINE:

PYROMANCY

Practitioners of the First Outer Discipline are known as pyromancers or firemages. The skills of the pyromancer include the ability to conjure and control flames, the creation of pyrobolus, the summoning of djinns, and divination by means of fire. Their distinctive red robes and masques covered their bodies, routinely burned and ashen by their fiery practices. The first High Mage of Pyromancy was named Tosun and he hailed from the far sothron village of Nothelm.

THE SECOND OUTER DISCIPLINE:

HYDROMANCY

Practitioners of the Second Outer Discipline are known as hydromancers or aquamages. The skills of the hydromancer include the control of and power over bodies of water, the conjuring of tsunamis and waterspouts, the summoning of undines, and divination by observation of the movements of waves and ripples. Hydromancers were recognized by their cloaks coated in seaweed and torn netting, their skin often pale and bloated and their eyes yellowed and sunken. Aquamages were blamed for the Drowning of Virgilstad, and many of their order disappeared. The first High Mage of Hydromancy was named Mullineux and he hailed from the sunken temple at Blackpoole.

THE THIRD OUTER DISCIPLINE:

AEROMANCY

Practitioners of the Third Outer Discipline are known as aeromancers or windmages. The skills of the aeromancer include mastery over the four winds, the ability to conjure cyclones and whirlwinds, the summoning of sylphs, and divination by observation of the winds. Their control of the winds even enabled some windmages to fly. The ancient aeromancers were known to wear light, airy robes covered in feathers, which oftentimes led them to be mistaken for giant birds. They shunned the work of the arcanists and refused to help in the construction of aeroships, believing that only they were destined to explore the skies. The first High Mage of Aeromancy was named Gualterio and he hailed from the mountaintop village of Monsalvat.

THE FOURTH OUTER DISCIPLINE:

GEOMANCY

Practitioners of the Fourth Outer Discipline are known as geomancers or stonemages. The skills of the geomancer include control over the earth beneath their feet, the summoning of quakes and tremors, the conjuring of chthons, and divination by means of rocks and pebbles. Stonemages were known to adorn their clothing with gemstones and quartz, and their hands were often stained brown from digging through the dirt. Many of the great citadels in the ancient world were raised by stonemages. Their secrets would later be carried down by architects and stonemasons. The first High Mage of Geomancy was named Oerlikon and he hailed from the towering peak of Stag’s Horn.

THE FIFTH OUTER DISCIPLINE:

ELECTROMANCY

Practitioners of the Fifth Outer Discipline are known as electromancers or boltmages. This art developed as an offshoot of the Second Outer Discipline of Hydromancy. The skills of the electromancer include the control of lightning, the summoning of thunderstorms and tempests, the conjuring of raiju, and divination by means of electricity. They were known to style their hair into mohawks and the men wore long, curling mustaches. The first High Mage of Electromancy was named Vorenus and he hailed from the metropolis of Yverdon.

THE SIXTH OUTER DISCIPLINE:

CRYOMANCY

Practitioners of the Sixth Outer Discipline are known as cryomancers or frostmages. This art developed as an offshoot of the Second Outer Discipline of Hydromancy. The skills of the cryomancer include the creation of ice, the conjuring of blizzards, the summoning of chinooks, and divination by observation of snowflakes. The frostmages wore heavy cloaks woven from yeti fur and covered their faces in thick wrappings to stave off the cold, however their fingers would often become black and frostbitten. The first High Mage of Cryomancy was named Kolomond and he hailed from the frozen fortress of Winter’s End.

THE SEVENTH OUTER DISCIPLINE:

FLOROMANCY

Practitioners of the Seventh Outer Discipline are known as floromancers or woodmages. This art developed as an offshoot of the Fourth Outer Discipline of Geomancy. The skills of the floromancer include mastery over trees and plants, the summoning of kodama, the ability to communicate with ents, and divination by means of leaves and roots. Woodmages would commonly dress themselves in robes made of leaves and grass and adorn themselves with vines and roots. The first High Mage of Floromancy was named Sicambri and she hailed from the hidden forest temple of Woods Deep.

THE EIGHTH OUTER DISCIPLINE:

VENOMANCY

Practitioners of the Eighth Outer Discipline are known as venomancers or banemages. This art developed as an offshoot of the Seventh Outer Discipline of Floromancy. The skills of the venomancer include the creation of poisons and potions, the summoning of miasma, the control of serpents, and divination by means of snake venom. Banemages wore little clothing, often only to preserve their modesty, while wearing headdresses consisting of dozens of coiling snakes. Their arms and hands were often covered in hundreds of tiny bites, which over time would dull them to the effects of the venom. The first High Mage of Venomancy was named Caithness and she hailed from the ruined city of Nal.

THE NINTH OUTER DISCIPLINE:

FERROMANCY

Practitioners of the Ninth Outer Discipline are known as ferromancers or steelmages. This art developed as an offshoot of the Fifth Outer Discipline of Electromancy. The skills of the ferromancer include mastery over the fields of magnetism, the construction of automatons, and divination by means of metals. Steelmages, unlike many of their other Magickal brethren, were trained not only in the arts of Magick but also in warfare. As such, steelmages would accompany knights onto the battlefield, wearing heavy armor and wielding longswords and warhammers. The first High Mage of Ferromancy was a Drow named Roodhollow and he hailed from the foundries of Drowick.

THE FIRST INNER DISCIPLINE:

HIEROMANCY

Practitioners of the First Inner Discipline are known as hieromancers or holymages. Along with the other Inner Disciplines, the art of Hieromancy is one of the most difficult of the Magickal studies to master. Reserved for only the most pure of heart, the skills of the hieromancer include the ability to heal sickness and injury, the conjuring of ophanim, the revitalization of mana,  and  divination by means of sacred objects. Holymages are still found around the world to this day, in sanctuaries where they can bestow benediction on those seeking mana healing. The first High Mage of Hieromancy was named Desdemona and she hailed from the sacred city of Listowel.

THE SECOND INNER DISCIPLINE:

NECROMANCY

Practitioners of the Second Inner Discipline are known as necromancers or deathmages. Along with the other Inner Disciplines, the art of necromancy is one of the most difficult of the Magickal studies to master. The skills of the necromancer include the revitalization and raising of the dead, the conjuring and control of ghouls, and divination by means of bones and entrails. Often shunned even in the ancient days, necromancers were only accepted for their funerary customs. It was by their guidance that the spirits of the dead would find peace. The first High Mage of Necromancy was named Valcarel and he hailed from the shadow city of Darmine.

THE THIRD INNER DISCIPLINE:

NIHILOMANCY

Practitioners of the Third Inner Discipline are known as nihilomancers or voidmages. Along with the other Inner Disciplines, the art of Nihilomancy is one of the most difficult of the Magickal studies to master. The skills of the nihilomancer include the ability to erase thoughts, the opening of voidrifts, the summoning of eldritch, and divination by means of meditation on something they call the “Great Nothing”. By far the most mysterious and least understood of the Sixteen Disciplines, the art of nihilomancy was known only to a small group of mages living in the Neverwood. A great Magickal war was fought many ages ago, long before Man rose up against the Gods. These voidmages became obsessed with the concept of the Great Nothing and sought to bring oblivion to all living things. They were stopped by one of their own, Zozaris, who betrayed them and took up the mantle of the first High Mage of Nihilomancy.

THE FORBIDDEN DISCIPLINE:

HAEMOMANCY

Haemomancy, also known as “bloodmagick” is the only Magickal art expressly forbidden by edict of the High Mages. Bloodmagick developed as an offshoot of Necromancy, but its power over the living led it to ultimately be outlawed at the magickal lyceums. Practitioners of the Forbidden Discipline are known as haemomancers or bloodmages, and have been hunted by the appropriately named Magehunters for thousands of years. The skills of the bloodmage include the ability to manipulate the ichor of living creatures, thereby bending them to the will of the mage. The art of Haemomancy often leads weak-willed mages to become vampyr, bearing an insatiable hunger for the blood of Men. Legends claim that the first High Mage of Haemomancy, Lesperith, still lives in a sort of undead slumber somewhere deep beneath the ancient necropolis of Sinneslochen.
