MAGE

A PRACTITIONER OF THE HIGH ART OF MAGICK

A mage is a practitioner of the high art of Magick, a skill said to have been passed to Man from the Gods. In the time of the Heroes, mages were plentiful and the “Sixteen Disciplines” were taught at lyceums spread throughout the known world. These disciplines were headed by High Mages, and a great Archmage which presided over them all. With the fall of the Gods, so too did the teaching of Magick, until very few true mages remained. Whereas traditionally one would choose a discipline and study it for years until they learned all of its eldritch mysteries, the mages that exist today are but dabblers in their craft, taking bits of knowledge from various disciplines though mastering none. These halfmages, as they’ve come to be known, are often found in the employ of automaton refurbishers or aeroship refueling depots that can’t afford contracts with the Arcanist Guilds. Still others find work as members of bandit crews, conning wealthy patrons out of their crescents with cheap parlor tricks or seducing them with fabricated tales of antiquity. These pirate mages are well known on the sothron island of Glodovin. The task of tracking down these swindlers has fallen to the Order of the Malleus Maleficarum, also known as the Magehunters, a group originally formed to hunt down rogue bloodmages in ancient days.

Dobruja, a sunmage, a blind and penniless beggar seen frequently in the bazaar of Baron’s Cove; Svarta, a moonmage who lives in a small hovel on the edge of the Dimwood with her familiar, a death’s head owl named Ilvi; and Hibaru, a pirate mage from Glodovin who plies his trade along the treacherous routes of the Inner Sea.
