A SELF-OPERATING ARTIFICE POWERED BY MANA

Automatons, or ‘toms as they are more colloquially known, are self-operating machine artifices powered by mana. Originally, the construction of automatons was a secret closely guarded by steelmages, practitioners of the Ninth Outer Discipline of Magick known as ferromancy. As Magickal practices began to give way to Scientific pursuits, the secrets of ferromancy and other Magickal disciplines (such as chronomancy and electromancy) were divulged by arcanists, those who dabbled in an esoteric blend of Magick and Science. As Arcanist Guilds began to spread around the world, their mechanical assistants, automatons, spread with them. Today, there are all manner of automatons - engineering and mechanist ‘toms that assist their living counterparts; construction, demolition and excavation ‘toms that can handle heavy operations much more dutifully than Man; and even instructional ‘toms that teach arithmetic lessons to the children of wealthy nobles. Each automaton is powered by one or more mana infusion cells, which translate nascent Magickal energy into a consumable fuel source. The largest automaton manufactory in the westron lands is the Loci Manaworks. In the east, the two largest are the Dolocile Conglomerated Manufactories of Yverdon and the Falke-Van Rooten Company of Dayspring.
